Thinking about the police force in Kenya and how relevant a lot of this is, especially with the police brutality witnessed in the recent protests. People are starting to realize that the institution is a legacy of colonialism and the police are only here to protect the interests of the political class and other capital owners.

Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in their budgets while cuts are being made to education and healthcare services.

I wasn’t much of an advocate for the defund the police movement. But we cannot ignore the structural racism in these institutions both in the Uk and America. Once we recognise that these institutions were initially built for the purpose of catching slaves and disciplining slave. We should not be blind to the future and current implications of that on our society and world.

It always baffles me how much people overlook institutional racism within the UK, (a nation built off of imperialism and colonisation), simply because we’ve become extremely good at being fairly quiet
